Widow's Wood
Widow's Wood is a deeply unsettling and mysterious section of forest where the very essence of light seems to be consumed. This heavily darkened area absorbs all light, rendering even the brightest torches and magical light sources useless. From above, this patch of forest appears as a pure black void, standing in stark contrast to the surrounding greenery. Few who have ventured into Id’s Shadow have returned, and those who have speak of an overwhelming assault on their psyche, as if their very mind was being "tugged" and "stretched." This eerie place has a profound effect on those who enter, forcing them to confront the darkest corners of their soul.
Relection of the Self: Widow's Wood forces those who enter to confront their true selves. While in the forest, any spell or ability that reveals hidden aspects of the self, such as detect thoughts or zone of truth, automatically succeeds without requiring a saving throw. However, this also means that others within the forest can easily discern the true nature of those around them, leading to potential conlicts or revelations. This mystical property underscores the forest’s role as a mirror to the soul.
Abilities
Light Absorption: Widow's Wood nulliies all sources of light, both natural and magical. Any light-producing item or spell brought into the area is immediately extinguished, and creatures within the forest are plunged into total darkness. Darkvision is ineffective, as the darkness in this area is not simply the absence of light, but a tangible force that actively absorbs it. Creatures in Widow's Wood must rely on non-visual senses to navigate. Psyche Tug: The dark energies within Widow's Wood exert a powerful inluence on the minds of those who enter. Any creature that spends more than 10 minutes within the forest must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, the creature experiences a mental assault, where they feel their psyche being pulled in different directions. This effect causes 3d6 psychic damage and imposes disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws for 24 hours. Additionally, the creature is compelled to confront deep-seated fears or desires, potentially altering their personality or goals Shadow's Embrace: The darkness in Widow's Wood has a living quality, almost as if it is aware of those within it. Creatures who enter the forest are subject to the forest's inluence, which attempts to merge their mind with the darkness. Once per day, a creature in the forest must make a DC 17 Charisma saving throw or fall into a trance-like state for 1 hour. While in this state, the creature is vulnerable to suggestions or mental manipulation, and any attempt to resist these effects is made with disadvantage.
