Arin Caves

An Underground Nation

Overview

Stretching beneath the alpine peaks and valleys of Areeott is a massive and ancient cave system, an intricate network that links the entire country. These underground routes have long served as both natural formations and man-made expansions, creating a vital part of Areeott's culture, economy, and history.

History and Role

The caves of Areeott have played a role since the dawn of time, sheltering early settlers and providing sanctuary during the many wars that have ravaged the land. Their most significant use came during the Arin Civil War, where entire populations sought refuge, and secret battles were waged beneath the surface. Before the war, the caves were meticulously mapped, but during the chaos, the maps were mysteriously lost, making these subterranean routes both a marvel and a danger for adventurers today.

Functions and Uses

Transportation and Trade: These underground passages serve as alternative routes for transportation, particularly during Areeott’s harsh winters. Merchants and travelers alike use them to move goods and people across the country, bypassing the difficult terrain above.   Commerce: Certain towns and cities have developed an entire underground economy, with shops, black markets, and artisan craftsmen all thriving in the undercity. In some places, these caves serve as extended basements for blacksmiths, butcher shops, and other trades that are too messy or loud for surface life.   Smuggling and Crime: Some sections of the cave network are controlled by crime families, such as the powerful Anakis. These areas are notorious for illegal activity, and while Corvyn’s rule maintains strict order on the surface, the underworld is far more lawless and dangerous.

Natural and Wild Zones

Not all parts of the cave system are inhabited by people. Some areas have been overtaken by natural forces, becoming the domain of unique plant and animal life. Others are overrun with strange creatures, hostile to all who enter. These sections remain largely unexplored and dangerous, drawing adventurers and fortune-seekers in search of lost treasures or hidden knowledge.

The Lost Maps

One of the great mysteries of Areeott’s cave system is the lost maps. Once carefully documented, the full layout of the underground has been lost for centuries, leading to speculation that parts of the cave system remain undiscovered, harboring secret vaults or relics from before the Shattering. Adventurers often seek these lost maps, hoping to uncover what lies forgotten beneath the surface.

Areas of Interest

Certain sections of the cave system are known for their significance:   Venlin's Undercity: The capital city of Venlin has an entire subterranean district, home to black markets, illegal activities, and hidden treasures. The Smuggler’s Passages: Located near the borders, these tunnels are infamous for their use by smugglers and outlaws. The Cavern of Echoes: A vast, unexplored section of the caves that’s said to be haunted by the voices of the long-dead.

Adventure Awaits

Areeott's cave systems offer endless potential for adventure, whether in the form of exploring lost tunnels, encountering dangerous wildlife, or delving into the darker corners of crime and smuggling operations.
